Central Johannesburg Church of Christ was started by the Missionary Eric Obeng at Hillbrow, in central Johannesburg and that time it was known as Hillbrow Church of Christ.  Due to the lack of financial resources and the high increase of rent and some of brethren decided to go and fellowship at the University of Witwatersrand and the church became known as Wits Church of Christ. Some decided to go to Betrams, Johannesburg East and the church there at Betrams became known as Betrams Church of Christ.  Also due to the problem of high increase of rent the church moved from Betrams to Central Johannesburg. This is why it is called Central Johannesburg Church of Christ. In year 2007, the preacher Brother Augustine Babunga went to America and Brother Seth Mokoena succeeded him. In year 2009 church started a relief program for the needy called a Good Samaritan Foundation directed by Brother Eric Obeng and youth program called Churches of Christ Youth Network directed by Brother Philip Larbi Adjei. By the effort of the Central Johannesburg Church of Christ a new Church (Kempton Park Central Church of Christ) was born at Kempton Park. In November 2009 Central Johannesburg Church of Christ was accredited and registered In Terms of the Nonprofit Organization Act, 1997 by the Department of Social Development as a non-profit organization. Its registration number is 073-580-NPO. Central Johannesburg Church of Christ is also a member of the Gauteng Council of Churches and the South African Council of Churches.
